Rupture / Bursting Discs
Rupture discs are widely used in the pharmaceutical, pressure safety, chemical processing, oil and gas, battery storage (BESS), and food and beverage industries, along with original equipment manufacturing (OEM).
A rupture / bursting disc is a non-re-closing vent designed to open when exposed to a set pressure differential. The pressure relief device protects processes and equipment from vacuum or over-pressurisation. Rupture discs can be manufactured from standard materials, including stainless steel, Hastelloy and nickel, as well as non-standard materials such as tantalum, Monel and Inconel.
Teksal Safety supplies a wide range of high-performance rupture / bursting discs for diverse applications in the oil & gas, mining and industrial sectors.

Rupture / Bursting Discs FAQs
-
What types of rupture / bursting discs are available?
There are two main categories of disc designs:
- Forward acting (tensile loaded)
- Reverse acting (compression loaded)
However, graphite and custom design (OEM) discs are also available.
-
What size rupture / bursting discs are available?
We supply rupture / bursting discs from 1/8” (3mm) up to 32” (800mm) in diameter.
-
What does ‘working pressure to burst pressure ratio’ mean?
This is the margin between the maximum recommended working pressure for the disc design and the bottom limit of the burst pressure for the disc.
-
Can I reuse the holder and replace the disc after it has burst?
In most cases, the holders are reusable, and it is only the disc that needs to be replaced. Some applications are more suited to an integral holding device, which is also discarded following a burst.
For a disc with an independent holder and integrated burst detection, only the disc has to be replaced, eliminating the need to hold stock of detectors.
-
How do I know when a rupture / bursitng disc has burst?
Depending on the installation and complexity of the control system, the easiest solution is a rupture disc with integrated burst detection. The disc comes with a small magnet, which is pulled away from the sensor upon burst. When installed with the Flo-Tel detection system this gives an open circuit signal.
